The Department of Energy Systems is a major partner in the European collaborative project "MAESHA - DeMonstration of smArt and flExible solutions for a decarboniSed energy future in Mayotte and otHer European islAnds", which investigates the decarbonisation of energy systems of geographical islands by fostering the large deployment of RES through the installation of tailored innovative flexibility services based on a close study and modelling of local energy systems and community structures. Besides tasks as the consortium leader the work packages of the department include:

  • Development of a modelling environment capable of supporting the real-time operation and balancing of the islands' electricity grid, i.e. modelling of system imbalances, frequency deviations and the required short-term balancing capacity, congestions or power quality issues (e.g. voltage drops)
  • The development of an analytical framework based on the Sustainable Development Goals to assess the impact of energy system transformation on the local socio-economic and ecological system of the island,
  • Development and design of an energy and flexibility market for islands, which takes into account the island-specific challenges regarding grid stability and often vertically integrated market structures,
  • Analysis of the regulatory framework and formulation of political and regulatory recommendations for renewable energies, energy efficiency and incentives for flexibility in order to create local incentives for the energy transition and recruit prosumers,
  • Define innovative business models for the local energy market, tailored for the specific off-grid use case. The TUB will contribute to this work by providing modelling results as well as political and regulatory guidelines to explore the suitability of these new business models for the context,
  • Model-based analysis of the economic, social and employment structural distributional effects of energy system transformation at the energy system level, actor level and macroeconomic level,
  • Development of a methodology for life cycle analysis of energy system transformation on islands and illustration of relevant scenarios using the example of the demonstration island of Mayotte.
